Kat The Survivor

Kat: Original Character

A cat species from an unknown frozen desert in a parallel universe. Kat has been summoned to accompany her sister on a journey to the spirit world; it has been her destiny from birth. Though she is ignorant of the fact of her sister, she still believes that her true destiny is of the journey and if she succeeds, her accomplishments of this universe are finished. She is optimistic and only focuses on the goal at hand. She doesn't dwell on emotion and is not dramatic. She is a lot like Keita with her personality and optimism.

Powers--She adapts and absorbs to any power that is taught to her, but was born with water powers. She knows fire techniques from Fiona and healing techniques from Chu

Character Concepts One

Here's my characters from my first book; which is completed. But have not came up with a title for it yet...it's a science fiction/fantasy. It's about five girls of very different alien heritages on a fantastic journey to save the universe from an evil corruption! There's a terrible manifestation of negative energy that materializes into a tangible being and has wrecked havoc upon the dead world. Such negative energy is leaking into the real universe and darkness becomes more potent. My heroins are going to the source of the terror to face their deepest darkest fears and test their physical, mental, and emotional limits. It's a story about courage, true friendship, and unavoidable situations.
People would feel tension, excitement, fear, suspension, stress, happiness, and by the end sadness with a new hope. It's my first book in my new series which entices the mind to think beyond this world and beyond our universe.

Transitioning: Character Concepts

I want to combine both my alternative 'traditional' style with my digital style. I am still working on making both of these styles co-exist. However, somewhat failed at this attempt, nonetheless, have made both of these styles exist separately.
These are my concepts and original characters for my second book which I am still currently writing and second in the series to be finished.

My alternative style concepts:

Chu Arashi: A healer; and the youngest of my concepts. Living a hard life since the war broke out upon his planet. Controls the power of yellow lightning. Sharpie and pen.
Kuchita Shell: Half-brother to Chu and older, wiser...serious about protecting his people from the ravages of the war and salvaging what little resources their village has. Holds the power of yellow lightning. Sharpie and pen.

Timber Tazuna: A menace of an apposing tribe here to pillage surrounding villages of resources and to thin the herd of the other races of their planet's people. Resources are thin and people are starving and thirsty. Controls the power of red lightning. Sharpie and pen.
Final Concept: All three of my original characters battle it out two brothers against the imminent threat. Sharpie and pen.

With my digital output, I included backgrounds to give you; the viewer, more of an insight to the planet's environment. My inspiration for first creating these characters when I was 14 years old came straight from Dragon Ball Z with their looks and lightning powers.

My digital style concepts:

Chu Arashi
 Kuchita Shell
 Timber Tazuna

Final output of my concepts.

More to come with my meshing of my alternative style with digital style. This is a mere stepping stone and quite a learning experience to get to that harmonious point.

My Process

This is my process in Photoshop that I go through to create illustrations. I wanted to create my version of a vampire, since a lot of movies lately such as Twilight have changed the vampires to more human which is a travesty on my end. They're supposed to be scary un-dead creatures that used to have human life. I wanted to recreate the vampire with human qualities and emotion but see the creatures they have become upon death.

The structure, with every drawing there has to be an underlying structure to start off with to figure out the composition. I have a light opacity of black.
The drawing, I usually start with a drawing, much like pencil to paper, except digitally done. This stage further refines the composition. I use a different color and 100% opacity.
I usually start with the skin, however, every artist is different when starting with a certain area, usually a lot of artists start with the eyes...as I used to do. This consists of 4-5 layers of different skin colors to get a dynamic.
I've added more tones to the skin as relation to the overall composition, the eyes are striking at this point because of the horror aspect of this illustration.
It's still very very rough at this point but further refined than the previous steps.
At this point, I've added a dark background and black wherever it needed it to be, however, I was at a standstill when it came to the background composition. I knew I wanted a moon and I wanted it to be night time...But couldn't decide on what the overall composition should be about.
One night, I looked up into the sky and the moon was low and blood red I decided to go with a red moon because of its ominous presence it conveyed to me that one night.
I continued to realize the background and figure so that they are separate but related to each other with color and depth.

'Defiance' Sequential Series

I've done more small sequential pieces that relate to me as self-portraits and are scenes from my stories that I'm currently writing.

 Controlled  story in progress
Thorns of Love story in progress

Both of these are still works in progress...I've felt that I haven't done my best on these works...Still working on these.
